When you first start to look into treatment options for substance use and/or mental health, it can be difficult to know how to proceed when there are so many choices.

Some people are so overwhelmed by the sheer volume of options that they avoid seeking help altogether, which can be incredibly dangerous to their health and life.

That’s why we’re going to help make your options clearer; think of this article as your mini guide to help you figure out which treatment option is right for you. We’re going to take a closer look at what an adult partial hospitalization program is, as well as how it compares in relation to long-term and day treatment programs.

What is partial hospitalization?

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a support program for clients who have completed residential treatment; PHP provides them with ongoing support as needed while giving them the ability to live at home or in a recovery residence.

These programs are typically active three to five days per week and require a few hours of commitment each day. They’re ideal for people who are stable enough to function and take care of their basic needs (which is why they’re able to reside at home) but require additional guidance, structure and accountability as they transition fully into independent sobriety.

PHPs are also a good option for people who are unable to commit or afford a full-time residential treatment program, as well as for people who are unwilling to attend a full-time program (the reasons behind this vary).

Long-term vs partial hospitalization vs day treatment programs

One of the great things about treatment, regardless of if it’s for mental or health, is that there’s no “one size fits all” approach to care options.

The three standard treatment programs are long-term, partial hospitalization and day treatment programs. The biggest differences between these programs are the time commitments and locations of hosted treatments.

Long-term treatment: care can look a little different per person, depending on factors such as the level of support needed, and whether or not the client will benefit more from an intensive outpatient or residential treatment plan. Typically, long-term care is a form of treatment deeply embedded in the continuum of care cycle, one that’s usually at least a few months and can last upwards of a year.

Day treatment program: the time commitment is significantly less, which enables you to work on other areas of your life, such as your relationships, education and career. You will be living at home full-time, and only going in for treatment for a couple of hours per day, usually less than five days per week.

Partial hospitalization program: you’ll be engaging in full-time treatment each week (up to eight hours a day), spread out over up to five days per week, and these treatments are usually held in a formal hospital setting. You are still able to return to your own residence (or temporary recovery residence) at the end of each day.

All three of these programs are always facilitated and managed by qualified medical professionals who are experienced in the fields of mental health and substance use.
